On Wednesday morning, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris will be sworn into office to begin Biden’s term as the 46th President of the United States. The ceremony is set to take place on the West Front of the Capitol Building.
Harris, who will make history as the first female vice president and the first Black woman and the first woman of South Asian descent to hold that office, will be sworn in by Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Biden will then be sworn in by Chief Justice John Roberts, as is tradition. After that, Biden will deliver an inaugural address to lay out his vision for his first days as president.
The inaugural ceremony will be unlike any other, with strict COVID-19 safety protocols in place and heightened security due to the Capitol riot that took place just two weeks ago. Outgoing President Donald Trump will not attend.
Lady Gaga, Jennifer Lopez and Garth Brooks are set to perform at the swearing-in ceremony.
A virtual inaugural parade will also take place, hosted by Scandal star Tony Goldwyn, along with a rare appearance from former Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
At 8:30 p.m. EST, Tom Hanks will host the inaugural primetime special to conclude the day’s events, featuring appearances from Jon Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, John Legend, Eva Longoria, Demi Lovato, Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Kerry Washington.
