WarnerMedia Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff had strong words for “toxic” DC fans in the wake of releasing Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The executive was asked about the reputation of some of Snyder’s fandom and reports that some executives perceived as being anti-Snyder Cut had received threats.
“We’re not tolerating any of that,” Sarnoff told Variety as part of an interview posted Monday on the studio’s DC future. “That behavior is reprehensible no matter what franchise you’re talking about or what business you’re talking about. It’s completely unacceptable. I’m very disappointed in the fans that have chosen to go to that negative place with regard to DC, with regard to some of our executives. It’s just disappointing because we want this to be a safe place to be. We want DC to be a fandom that feels safe and inclusive. We want people to be able to speak up for the things they love, but we don’t want it to be a culture of cancelling things that any small faction isn’t happy with. We are not about that. We are about positivity and celebration.”
In addition, Sarnoff shot down another fan-led campaign for a critically panned DC film: To have director David Ayers make a new cut of 2016’s Suicide Squad. “We won’t be developing David Ayer’s cut,” she said.
Snyder has likewise addressed the issue in recent months, yet has pushed back against the “toxic” label. “It’s just a bunch of BS,” the director told CinemaBlend in a story published in February. “In regards to that toxic fandom, or [the Snyder Cut release is] ‘a win for toxic fandom,’ again, in what world does this ‘toxic fandom’ raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for suicide prevention? How is that toxic fandom? They’ve probably achieved more than any other fan base, [and done more] good than any other group. So I don’t understand. … We know the people who were the architects of that narrative, and it’s pretty obvious what their agenda is. Those are people that I’ve been held back from confronting, by wiser people in the room.”
Last week, Snyder revealed to The Hollywood Reporter some of the ideas that didn’t make it into the four-hour cut.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League was released last week on HBO Max.
