Taylor Swift’s Folklore era is continuing with a new album.
After already surprising fans this year with the release of her eighth studio album Folklore, a Disney+ special and the announcement that she has begun re-recording her masters, Swift had another special surprise in store Thursday with the release of a new album called Evermore, along with a music video for her new single “Willow.”
When announcing her ninth album, Swift said “to put it plainly, we just couldn’t stop writing songs. “To try and put it more poetically, it feels like we were standing on the edge of the folklorian woods and had a choice: to turn and go back or to travel further into the forest of this music. We chose to wander deeper in,” Swift wrote on Instagram.
As in Folklore, for Evermore Swift continues to work with producer and The National guitarist Aaron Dessner and Bon Iver, who co-wrote and sings on one of the tracks. Swift’s frequent collaborator producer/songwriter/singer Jack Antonoff, also joined forces with the singer once again for the new album. As for William Bowery, who Swift revealed to be boyfriend Joe Alwyn? He also returns as songwriter on some of the album’s songs.
This time around Swift welcomes HAIM and The National who join the singer on a couple of the album’s 15-song track list (Swift already announced two bonus tracks will be available).
Evermore marks the first album Swift, who is known for treating albums as different eras, has continued Folklore with a follow-up, complementary album. “I’ve never done this before. In the past I’ve always treated albums as one-off eras and moved onto planning the next one after an album was released,” Swift wrote in her annoucement. “There was something different with Folklore. In making it, I felt less like I was departing and more like I was returning. I loved the escapism I found in these imaginary/not imaginary tales. I loved the ways you welcomed the dreamscapes and tragedies and epic tales of love lost and found into your lives. So I just kept writing them.”
In the music video for “Willow,” Swift immediately kicks off where her visual for “Cardigan” left off. Swift, wrapped in her now signature cardigan, is first shown seated at her piano inside the cozy cabin. Like in the original video, Swift follows the magical, golden string and steps inside her piano to find herself transported to an enchanted forest where she finds herself in a fairy-tale with a love as she sings, “that’s my man.”
Following its July 24 release, Folklore became the first album to sell a million copies in the U.S. in 2020. Swift also received Grammy nominations for album of the year and pop vocal album. The singer also secured song of the year and best pop solo performance nods for “cardigan,” which she wrote with Dessner. Her song “exile,” featuring Bon Iver, is also up for best pop duo/group performance.
