A Russian submarine that was used in the Harrison Ford film K-19: The Widowmaker caught fire this week in a Rhode Island scrapyard.
While it was in the process of being dismantled, a spark ignited rubber coating which led to a fire that burned roughly a 100 square-foot section, Michael Healey, spokesman for the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, told local media.
The submarine, which sank into the Providence River in 2007, has been in the process of being dismantled since June 2019, Healey told media. About two dozen firefighters responded to the unusual blaze. There were no reported injuries.
In 2002’s K-19: The Widowmaker, Ford plays commanding officer Alexei Vostrikov of the nuclear submarine K-19. Kathryn Bigelow directed the historical drama co-starring Liam Neeson as executive officer Mikhail “Misha” Polenin. The movie was a critical and box office disappointment.
Ford is next slated to appear in Indiana Jones 5. Production of the installment, which will be directed by James Mangold, was sidelined due to the pandemic.
“It’s going to be fun,” Ford previously said of the upcoming film. “They are great fun to make.”
A release date for Indiana Jones 5 has not been announced.
