Sony Pictures Virtual Reality and British development studio XR Games unveiled on Thursday a VR shooter game set in the Zombieland universe.
Zombieland: Headshot Fever tasks players with joining Columbus, played by Jesse Eisenberg in Ruben Fleischer’s 2009 film; Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock as they take on the undead amid a zombie-killing racecourse. The game is inspired by 1990s’ arcade-style light-gun shooting and modern racing titles, and will, as the companies describe, retain the humor and action of Zombieland and its sequel, Double Tap.
“Being trusted with bringing an iconic Sony Pictures franchise to life is extra rewarding and exciting when you’re a huge fan of Zombieland,” said Bobby Thandi, founder and CEO of XR Games, in a statement. “The Zombieland world is a no-nonsense kind of place, and to this end we’ve made one of the purest shooting games for VR. We hand crafted the content, upping replay-ability, and incorporated mechanics from racing games such as time splits so you know exactly how well you’re doing. It’s about practicing ’til you’re perfect.”
The game will feature an advanced weapon slate such as shotguns, revolvers and assault rifles, as well as global leaderboards where players can challenge their friends. An adrenaline system will come into play when users achieve two headshots in a row, making the world suddenly become slow — which can be used to their advantage.
Thandi adds, “Your performance is being assessed via the witty banter of Tallahassee, Columbus, Wichita, and Little Rock. They’re not gentle with their opinions!”
Founded in 2017, XR Games is headquartered in Leeds, England. In 2019, the company released Angry Birds Under Pressure VR, based on the hit animated franchise.
Zombieland: Headshot Universe will release this Spring on platforms including Oculus Quest and Oculus Rift, then later for PlayStation VR.
