Recording Academy interim chief Harvey Mason Jr. has issued an apology to Tiffany Haddish after the actress went public with the fact that she had been asked to pay her own way as host of the Grammy Awards preshow.

Mason referred to the decision, which came from a talent booker, as a “lapse in judgment.”

“So it’s just been brought to my attention that the Recording Academy invited Tiffany Haddish to host this year’s premiere ceremony,” said Mason in an Instagram video on Thursday. “Unfortunately, without me knowing, a talent booker working for the Academy told Ms. Haddish that we wouldn’t even cover her costs while she hosted this event for us. To me that was wrong; I’m frustrated by that decision. It was in poor taste and it was disrespectful to the creative community. I’m part of the creative community; I know what that feels like and it’s not right.”

He continued, “Thankfully, Ms. Haddish was gracious enough to allow me to have a conversation with her. I apologized to her personally, and I apologized to her from the Academy. I expressed [to] her my regret and my displeasure about how this went down and how it was handled.”

Mason ended the video message by apologizing and thanking Haddish for allowing him to speak on the matter.

Haddish, who is nominated in the comedy album category for Black Mitzvah, had previously shared with Variety that she had been asked to cover her own hair, makeup and wardrobe expenses as host of the live-streamed event.
