Kal Penn to Host Virtual 2021 Writers Guild Awards Ceremony
Kal Penn is set to host the 2021 Writers Guild Awards virtual ceremony.
“I’m very honored that the Writers Guild, of which I’m a member, chose me to bring together a wildly diverse range of people, from liberal writers on the West Coast to liberal writers on the East Coast. I’m just that unifying,” Penn said of the honor.
Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, virtual award shows may be commonplace throughout the spring. Last year, events such as the BET Awards, Emmys, Video Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards and American Music Awards featured a mix of live, pre-taped and virtual elements.
The 2020 Emmys went without an in-person audience at the Staples Center but host Jimmy Kimmel was on site along with a number of star presenters. The nominees in each category joined the ceremony via video from their own homes, where the winner accepted their award. Meanwhile, the AMAs, which took place just two days ago, featured a small, in-person live audience of socially-distanced, mask-wearing fans, all of whom had been tested for COVID-19. Host Taraji P. Henson and numerous performers and presenters were also on hand for the event.
The 73rd annual Writers Guild Awards will be held on Sunday, March 21, 2021.
