Timed to today’s Earth Day, Discovery+ released the documentary Endangered, a project that takes a deep dive into how conservationists work to protect endangered species, specifically gorillas, clouded leopards, Indonesian songbirds, sharks, frogs, lemurs and giraffes.

The project is narrated and executive produced by Ellen DeGeneres, who, in addition to her hosting and producing duties, is a passionate wildlife activist. In 2018, DeGeneres’s wife, Portia de Rossi, launched a foundation for her as a gift, The Ellen Fund. The organization first focused on securing refuge for wild mountain gorillas by supporting a 12-acre science and education campus for the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund in northern Rwanda. That area is set to open later this year.

In conjunction with the debut of Endangered, The Ellen Fund is expanding its efforts with the Endangered Campaign that seeks to raise $1 million that will be used to create programs supporting the species and communities featured in the Discovery+ documentary. In doing so, the fund will support what it deems the most effective nonprofits that serve these species on the ground. Per today’s news, The Elephant Cooperation leads the campaign as a “Conservation Hero” with a gift of $250,000 to increase awareness of endangered animals including protecting elephants.

“I love animals, and I want to protect them, especially when they’re endangered,” said DeGeneres in a statement announcing the campaign. “We need these incredible creatures and they need our love and compassion to help save them.”

More information about the fund and how to donate can be found here. She also shared a teaser clip from the doc today on her show along with an announcement of of the Endangered Campaign. The video is below.
