The 24th annual D.I.C.E. Awards, presented by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences, took place in a virtual format on Thursday.
Top honors went to rogue-like dungeon crawler Hades for game of the year, game direction and game design, as well as best independent game and best action game. The game is developed and published by San Francisco-based studio Supergiant Games.
Naughty Dog’s action-adventure The Last of Us Part II, a sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us, won two of its 11 nominations: outstanding achievement in story and animation.
Sucker Punch’s sweeping open-world samurai epic Ghost of Tsushima, which snatched up 10 nods this year, won four awards including best adventure game of the year.
Meanwhile, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales took home the award for outstanding achievement in character for its lead, Morales, the Brooklyn-born son of a Puerto Rican mother and Black American father, who rather reluctantly explores his superhero abilities.
A total of 57 games released in 2020 received nominations this year, with the winners chosen by a panel of industry leaders. The show was co-hosted by Kinda Funny podcast host Greg Miller and Jessica Chobot, host of Expedition Unknown on the Discovery Channel.
The D.I.C.E. Awards (Design, Innovate, Communicate, Entertain) have recognized achievements in video games since 1996.
