Chris Christie is calling for President Donald Trump to be removed from office after the violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol last week.
While appearing on ABC’s This Week, the former New Jersey governor and known Trump ally admitted that he considered the president’s incitement an “impeachable offense” and Republicans in Congress would have to “vote their conscience and look at what happened.”
“We had an incitement to riot at the United States Capitol. We had people killed and to me, there’s not a whole lot of question here,” he said.
Christie also said if he were in Congress, he would vote in favor of impeachment. “I think if inciting to insurrection isn’t impeachable, then I don’t really know what is.”
As Christie joins others Republicans speaking out against Trump, he explained that he’s heard from Republican lawmakers who have “had enough” and the frustrations have grown following Trump’s actions following the attack on the Capitol.
“I mean it is a national disgrace that the flag at the White House is not half-staff for that Capitol Hill Police officer who gave his life in protecting one of our institutions of democracy,” Christie said. “If we’re having to fit of pique, and that’s why we’re not putting a flag at half-staff, it’s just another example of why people think that these decisions are not being made on the merits.”
He also added that it seems decisions are being made “purely with the idea of what’s in my own personal desire at the moment.” “It’s just wrong,” he said.
Christie’s comments were made the same day Arnold Schwarzenegger released a deeply personal video in which he condemned the attack on Capitol Hill and blasted Trump for being a “failed leader.” “He will go down in history as the worst president ever. The good thing is he will soon be as irrelevant as an old tweet,” he said.
