Amazon’s Lord of the Rings video game … shall not … pass!
The company’s Game Studios division had announced an LOTR massively multiplayer online (MMO) in 2019 that was going to be free to play on PCs and counsels.
But alas, according to Reuters and other media outlets, the project is now as abandoned as the great mines of Moria.
Amazon Game Studios originally planned the project with Athlon Games. According to Bloomberg, Athlon’s parent company Leyou was acquired by Tencent Holdings last year, which led to a contract dispute. Amazon then issued a statement saying it’s “unable to secure terms to proceed with this title at this time” and added “we love the Lord of the Rings IP, and are disappointed that we won’t be bringing this game to customers.” An Amazon Game Studios representative did not reply to a request for comment.
The game was originally described as a World of Warcraft-style open-world game where players would be able to explore J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle Earth.
Amazon Game Studios has reportedly struggled since its founding in 2014 to launch a successful game and has had several false starts, having axed other previously announced titles like Breakaway and Crucible as well as repeatedly delayed another, New World.
Of course, Amazon Studios is still moving forward with its wildly ambitious Lord of the Rings television series, which is currently in production on its first season in New Zealand and could eventually span five seasons and spinoffs. The show is planned for a 2021 premiere.
